Video Block Development

On Not Taking On Too Much

I started out with the intention of blending 4 different formats into 1 video clip:

I had the plan of combining all of the above into one video clip with Capcut. However, the timing was running long, and I felt like there was a natural break before the demo. Once that was removed, the timing of the video felt appropriate, at around 5-6 minutes.

On Powtoon

Powtoon was an interesting experience. It’s fun in a way, but I would have expected more control over the timing - for example, the speed of transitions. It also lost my work a few times because it seemed to reset without saving. I think I would be unlikely to use it regularly unless there was a really good case for it, and in that case I would get the paid plan.

On the Wireframes and Storyboard

I come from a design background and use Figma, so I felt more comfortable in that to create the wireframes, vs the templates provided by DLI. This also helped me communicate where the prototype existed within the content map, since I didn’t choose to make the first lesson of the course for that.

The templates (for wireframes and storyboard) were helpful but I did find myself jumping around between them as I fleshed out my ideas, and there’s more redundancy in there that I would try to iron out differently next time.

On Video Creation

I used the rule of thirds to set up the shot, with my eyes at the juxtaposition of the first horizontal rule. I included lower-third information… though I feel like I could expand on this. I was surprised that Capcut didn’t have the robust lower-third options that were shown in the DLI videos. This makes me lean towards subscribing to Camtasia instead; though it’s more expensive, it seems to have more features for educational needs, including screen capture.

There’s plenty more I’d like to do with the core area, which is a lot of speaking at the moment without visuals happening. I’m torn a bit on whether to double down on Powerpoint for that or on Capcut, but I’m not seeing Capcut options for building image animation to the same extent.

Audio Arrggh

Getting the audio levels consistent was a challenge - I had to re-record my “filmed speaker” segments. I also need to figure out how to handle the microphone, as I do have one but realized it was too much in the shot for my filming location. Construction happening outside the window didn’t help much either. I’d probably need to purchase the Capcut pro version to try noise reduction as an option.

I ended up really diving in with my Articulate trial and created much of Module 1 (and a dash of Module 2) in Rise with an embedded Storyline block. I didn’t complete all of the documentation for that module so I didn’t replace my video with that work, but I’m pretty proud of it (and I’d probably choose Rise in the future if I can cover the cost).
